Movies for Losers: Part 1 (The Karate Kid- 1984)
OK, this is the one that started it all for me. I was 6, and this is the movie that first made me want to not be a little rolly-polly fat kid. Now granted, I think Daniel-san needed a sammich, but I wanted to be him when i was a kid. Oh how I wished I would find a little asian maintenance man I could call my own personal “Mr. Miagi”. I learned everything I needed to know about martial arts (for a 6 year old)….and home improvement, from that man.
Alas, I didn’t get the chance to learn martial arts until I was about 28, but I did continue on to get my black belt. Of course, when I ran out of money I stopped training, and got a rolly-polly again, but let’s not open up THAT can of worms, shall we.
It’s the classic story- underdog that no one believes in finds inner strength to rise above his circumstances and defeat a seemingly-superior opponent. Classic. Timeless. Cheeseball? Yes. Overdone? Sure. Motivating? BOY HOWDY. lol
If you do your own little “cardio theater” and watch movies while you exercise, I recommend this one. It’s a low-budget classic, and it will make you want to crane-kick a head-band-wearing baddie into oblivion. Good times.
Man, my floor really needs sanding…….
